“You’ve been hurt for so long that you have no idea you’re healed. It was over when you made amends on your past. You just had no idea about it since you’re used to getting hurt.” I never once thought that he, the strongest of us all, would break down because he felt he was losing me.

Damian’s the most incredible person in my life. People threw rocks at him and left him alone at his lowest. He used to be loved by everyone in this world — they’d be saying they wanted to be him in their next life when they didn’t know he went through a lot. His teenage years were filled with violence — his dad threw things at him when he was drunk. His mom left him when he was young, and his friends tricked him when he had his first business.

He went from being loved by many to the most hated person on earth. He was blamed for things that were far from his fault.

Everything changed, and it only took them less than a day to throw every possible harsh word at him. Then, news got out on how messy his family was, and no one would defend him like how badly they wanted to be friends with him in the past.

But that doesn’t change him. He’s still the nicest person on earth. Still lovely. And despite what he went through, he still smiles. He smiled even when he was at his lowest. That’s not something that people could do, not even me. “People have their own stories that they don’t wanna share. Being nice didn’t make you poor.” Said the nicest man on earth.

He still tried to be nice and help his friends whenever they needed him. However, they were never once by his side when things got complicated.

Years passed, and I met him in Rome on the bright summer days. We both were lost and were the only Indonesian people in that area. We exchanged contact, and that’s how I could be by his side.

“Thank you for always being here. You went through a lot because of me, Al. And I’m so sorry for that. I’m sorry for not being able to be the best person as I promised.” He said as he stepped off the ledge, vanishing into the bustling New York night below.

He endured the struggle of pretending for so long. The one who had everything was the one who had nothing at all.

But, with him, everything was enough.

With her, everything was enough.
